The Importance of Health Insurance | Hazen Mirts

Everyone talks about the importance of health insurance, but not many people actually explain it. You may not understand much about it at all, which is completely understandable! Health insurance can be easily learned about- which is what we’re going to do today.

What is health insurance?

Health insurance is a good way to pay for your medical and health care bills. Many people aren’t in the position to pay for all of their health care out of pocket, and can’t afford to just put it on a credit card. Health insurance is a way that you can easily pay for your health care.

Different kinds of health insurance: private and government-run

There are many types of health insurance plans. Some are run by the government to help the people. These two we’re going to talk about are run by the government:

  • Medicare: this health insurance is mostly for people aged 65+, as well as some people under 65, but have a disability
  • Medicaid: This health insurance is for someone who has a low income

There are also a multitude of private health insurance plans. You can get health insurance from your employer, or if you’re self-employed, you can purchase private health insurance. You typically pay monthly for this service, whereas with government-run health care, there is no monthly pay.

How health insurance works

With health insurance, when you go to the hospital or the doctor’s office, those bills get sent to the insurance company, who decide whether or not they can pay the full amount of the bill. These stipulations will be in the plan’s details.

It’s like car insurance. If you’re in a terrible car wreck and you have car insurance, your insurance should be able to pay some or all of the cost to fix or replace your car. For health insurance, they use the same thing: if you need surgery, or you’re going to an annual checkup or a vaccination, your health insurance covers some or all of the cost. It’s like if your car insurance paid for tire or oil changes, things that can prevent bigger accidents.

Why should I get health insurance?

There are two main reasons to get health insurance:

Health insurance as a safety net

If you’re in an unexpected accident, health insurance is there to help you cover the cost of medicine, doctor’s visits, emergency care, lab work, scans and examinations, even surgery if it’s necessary. These things can add up incredibly fast if you’re paying on your own.

Health care is an enormous financial burden if you don’t have something to help out. However, if you have health insurance in your arsenal, you won’t be paying alone. Your insurance plan is there to help you cover these enormous costs.

Preventing illnesses

Let’s face it: no one wants to be sick in the first place, so utilizing things covered by health insurance can make it easier for you to keep from getting sick. These include:

Moreover, health insurance can provide help when being diagnosed with harmful chronic conditions, like bipolar disorder, diabetes, or heart disease. Health insurance covers therapy, insulin and can even point you in the direction of good specialists so that you’re not alone.

It’s so vital if you have children that you give them routine and preventative care. Kids, infants, and pregnant mothers all need the care to keep them healthy. If you catch something early, early intervention can prevent huge problems and save lives.
